THEIR HAUNTING HONKS

I LOOKED SKYWARD TODAY;

A HAUNTING SOUND DREW ME.

NOT SO VERY HIGH UP,

I SPOTTED A FLYING VEE.

CANADIAN GEESE AWINGING;

THEIR WILD HONKING LOUD.

ALL FLYING IN FORMATION;

EACH ECHOING THEIR SOUND.

MIGRATORY INSTINCT CALLING;

WINTER HOME IN THE SOUTH.

ZIG-ZAGGING HERE AND THERE;

GATHERING, BY WORD OF MOUTH.

THEY MADE ME FEEL LONELY;

I FELT A STRANGE SADNESS.

AN ACHING DEEP INSIDE ME;

A FEELING I CAN'T EXPRESS.

I WANTED TO GO WITH THEM;

TO BE WILD AND FREE.

FLYING GRACEFULLY OVER THE EARTH;

HEADING SOUTH, TOWARDS THE SEA.

THEIR HAUNTING HONKS HELD ME;

I STOOD ROOTED TO THE SPOT.

SLOWLY, THEY FLEW FROM SIGHT,

TILL THEY WERE JUST A DOT.
